* Appellate:
The firm has always had an appellate specialist who handles appeals and provides advice and support for trials and dispositive motions. We handle a broad range of appeals in federal and state appellate courts, appeals generated from within and outside the firm.

* Complex and Catastrophic Litigation:
The firm regularly handles cases involving thousands of parties, millions of documents, or complex legal theories on the cutting edge of current case law. The firm has significant experience defending companies in litigation arising from catastrophic losses such as plant explosions and fires.

* Construction:
Barker Lyman represents owners, general contractors, and subcontractors in bodily-injury, property-damage, and construction defect suits and arbitrations arising out of residential and commercial construction. The firm also represents general contractors and subcontractors in bodily-injury, property-damage, and defect suits arising from highway construction projects.

* Dram Shop Litigation:
The firm was one of the first firms in Texas to become involved in dram shop litigation more than 20 years ago, and the firm continues to defend bars, convenience stores, restaurants, hotels, management companies, and their employees in dram shop lawsuits.

* General Negligence and Commercial Claims:
Barker Lyman represents defendants in a wide variety of negligence and commercial cases arising out of trucking accidents, criminal attacks (premises security), libel and slander, auto accidents, wrongful termination, premises liability, warranty and trade-practices disputes, and contractual disagreements (breach of contract, tortious interference, fraud).

* Insurance and Coverage Matters:
Since its founding, the firm has defended insurers in coverage and extracontractual litigation. We also analyze insurance-coverage questions, write insurance-coverage opinions, prosecute declaratory-judgement actions, and advise insurers about their coverage positions. As part of its insurance work, the firm defends insurance agencies and their employees against errors-and-omissions claims.

* Mass Tort:
The firm has significant experience handling mass-tort litigation. Specifically, the firm served as a regional counsel for a client in the breast implant litigation and the firm currently acts as national counsel for a defendant in the silicosis litigation.

* Oilfield/Pipeline Litigation:
The firm defends drilling contractors, subcontractors, casing crews, and company men in lawsuits involving fires, blowouts, equipment malfunctions, and other incidents at well sites.

* Products Liability:
Barker Lyman represents product makers, distributors, and marketers in products-liability suits. The firm has defended suits alleging defects in, among other products, elevators, manufactured homes, swimming pools, breast implants, industrial machinery, frozen food products, gas furnaces, circular saws, cars and trucks, ladders, cigarette lighters, cardiac pacing systems, and jaw joint implants.

* Professional Liability:
We defend doctors, nurses, dentists, clinics, attorneys, accountants, architects, and engineers in malpractice claims threatened or brought against them. The firm’s expertise in handling professional-liability claims has also guided it in representing less frequently sued professionals, including therapists, counselors, priests, psychologists, veterinarians, and insurance agents.

* Toxic Torts:
For over 20 years, the firm has defended toxic-exposure cases involving asbestos, benzine, cobalt, formaldehyde, hard metals, lubricants, paints, resins, silica, solvents, titanium, and various other chemicals and substances. That representation extends beyond the borders of Texas to states throughout the South. The firm also represents owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and insurance carriers in mold litigation.

* Transportation Litigation:
The firm defends common carriers, railroads and trucking companies, in personal-injury suits throughout Texas. Two of our attorneys are members of the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel.

Barker Lyman, P.C., concentrates in the preparation and trial of civil lawsuits. Located in downtown Houston, Texas, near the federal and state courthouses, the firm has its roots in the defense of personal-injury cases. The nature of the cases tried by the firm has changed over the years to encompass almost all areas of civil litigation. Six firm members have been certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Personal Injury Trial Law. Two members of the firm are also certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Civil Trial Law. The head of the firm's appellate section is triple board certified. Certification requires knowledge of the law, recommendations of peers, and significant courtroom experience. Six of our attorneys have been inducted into the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Founded in 1957, ABOTA selects attorneys from both sides of the docket who display integrity, civility, and advocacy; members must meet the Board's stringent requirements. One shareholder, Charlie Lyman, is a Diplomat member of ABOTA, a membership status achieved only by trial lawyers who have tried a minimum of 100 civil-jury trials to a verdict. The firm enjoys a reputation in the Texas legal community for hard work, good judgment, and outstanding advocacy at the courthouse.
